Models for display

I build models for display ranging from canoes and kayaks through sail boats and tugboats. Pictured below is a sample of my work. These models all utilize natural wood to bring out the beauty of the boats. Some are carved and some are built up as the original boats were built.

Whitehall Pulling boat Model custom built for a Santa Cruz California Resident

72" long, 18" wide. This model is built at approximately 1/3 scale just as the original was built, with steam-bent oak ribs, cedar planing teak seats, transom and details. She includes oars, oarlocks, rudder and more.

She represents the acme of working rowing boats. Whitehall Boats were used as water taxis in harbors such as Boston, and New York. They were built for speed and were frequently raced. They have become very popular with those who enjoy classic boats.

Plans are available for the home builder.

Baidarka (frame) Custom built for a New York City Resident

50" long, 6" wide. This is a model of an Aleutian Style kayak made from mahogany and oak. As with the prototype, the model is stitched together. The model makes an elegant touch above the door in owner's New York apartment.

Plans are available for the home builder. $10.00

Friendship sloop. $350.00

8" long, 8" high.

This model is carved from maple and mahogany with walnut accents. The sails are carved from cedar.

She represents a typical friendship sloop just returned from a sail.

Steam Tugboat $400.00

9 1/2" long, 7" high.

This model is also carved from maple and mahogany with walnut accents. The maple for this boat came from an old tree growing in my yard and has interesting grain patterns.

This model represents a typical small harbor tug from the East Coast of the US built in the late 1800s.

Greenland style kayak (frame) $300.00

27 1/2" long, 3" wide. (1:8 scale)

This model is built from northern white cedar. All the ribs are steam bent .

This kayak is my own design but is roughly representative of the Greenland style of kayak

Kayak with paddler $250.00 Sold

11" long, 1 3/4" wide.

This model was carved from maple. The wood had very unusual grain pattern. The spray-skirt is carved from walnut and the paddler's life-jacket is mahogany for contrast.

Whitehall boat $350.00

7 1/2" long, 2" wide (1:32 scale)

This model is built with a bass wood frame, northern white cedar planking and eastern red cedar seats and trim. The red cedar is from a fallen branch from the oldest cedar in Connecticut though to date from colonial times.

She is built plank on frame as the original was.

This type of boat was used as a utility boat in harbors through out the US and England in the 1800's. They were used as water taxis, and as tenders to ships. They also have been used as recreational boats being available to rent for outings. They are still popular for rowing and sailing.

I built one of these as a "lifeboat" for my operational tugboat "Nameaug" using mahogany, oak and cedar.
