The Deck and Hatches

On the prototype I felt the cockpit was a bit large so I added a piece to reduce its size and add thigh braces. Later, the cockpit combing will be added. This piece was glassed in from the inside. This is a nice idea if you want a tight fitting boat, in this case it made the boat a bit too tight for me (6'-2") but fits my wife (5'-10") comfortably. The plans have a hatch a more reasonable size (30-1/2"x 16-1/2")

I wired the deck to the hull, loosely at first, so I could reach in with my fingers to thread the wires into the holes. Then I tightened them to secure the deck for gluing.
I measured to get the locations of the hatches, laid out their profile and carefully cut them out. The piece which was removed will be saved to use as the hatch cover. With the hatches cut, I could reach inside to fillet the joint between the deck and hull with epoxy thickened with wood flour and apply the 3" wide fiberglass tape. I was able to reach nearly to the ends of the boat, beyond that will be sealed from the outside and with epoxy poured into the ends.
